How long does a UK Standard Visitor visa take?
Current UKVI guidance for visa applications made outside the UK lists the Standard Visitor processing time at around 3 weeks in the normal service.
The processing period does not simply start when you begin filling in the online form. UKVI says processing starts after you have completed the relevant identity step—typically when you attend the visa application centre for biometrics, or use the ID Check app where applicable—and your application and documents have been submitted.
Can a visitor visa take longer than 3 weeks?
Yes. UKVI lists several reasons an application may take longer, including information that needs further consideration, additional evidence requests, document verification, an interview, personal circumstances requiring more checks, higher application demand or technical problems.
When is the earliest you can apply?
For a Standard Visitor visa, the earliest current application point is 3 months before your planned travel date. Applying early enough gives you more room for the normal decision period and any unexpected delay.
Are faster services available?
Priority and super-priority services can be available for some applications and locations. Availability is shown during the application or appointment process. UKVI currently states that priority service usually aims for a decision within 5 working days for most visa applications, while super priority usually aims for the end of the next working day. Availability is not guaranteed for every case.
Should you book non-refundable travel before the decision?
UKVI currently advises applicants not to book travel until a decision has been received. A processing estimate is not a guarantee that a particular case will finish by a specific date.
